Blogging + Social Media: How to Grow your Online Presence

What does social media have to do with blogging?
Simple – it’s how you can get more eyeballs on your content!

Almost a year into the blog and we are finally figuring out this social media stuff. We definitely have made some mistakes along the way but who doesn’t? Here are some great tips if you are starting a blog and you have the urge to do it right here, right now.

Okay so social media.
Is it controlling your life or is it merely a business tool?
I think it is what you make it, honestly. It’s like anything else in your life you have control of it.

But I do know one thing…. It is hard to master, harder than you think going into it. I mean do you actually know how many travel blogs are out there?! There’s literally an Instagram out there for a dog… a traveling dog… And he has more followers than us! Say what?!?! Okay he is really, really cute!

So we are not experts, yet, but here’s what we’ve learned so far on how to grow your social media presence:

1. Quality content really is key.

No one wants to look at photos that are lacking aesthetic qualities nor do they want to see 1 million selfies of someone they don’t know either.

One thing we learned quick was to check the graininess of a photo on different resolutions. An iPhone 5 doesn’t have quite the same visual qualities of a Mac or even the new iPhone 6s.

2. It is a community.

Networking is so important. If you went into a bar alone would you expect to make any friends if you ignore everyone that said hi? (no).

Like photos, comment on photos, follow people you like. Build an online relationship with people, it’s like having a pen pal! And don’t forget about them once you establish a relationship.

3. Scheduling!

This is really important if you are constantly on the go! You may think you have time to shoot out a 140 character or less thought, and sometimes you do.

But just in case… Use a scheduling program. We use Hootsuite for Twitter and love it, it’s free for basic services but has some really awesome premium features too.

Facebook we just use the Facebook scheduling feature which works just fine. It’s important to stay consistent or you will lose followers.

And for Instagram we are huge fans of Plann!

4. There are so many resources!

It is really amazing how many resources are offered through social media and about social media. We have met some really awesome and helpful people through social networking!

And there are so many helpful free articles (like this one) to help you get started.

Here are a few of our favorites:

The Department of Wandering: Instagram
The Hungry Partier: All Social Media Channels
A Globe Well Travelled: Pinterest

5. Trial and Error

No matter how many “best time to post” articles I’ve read, I have come to find that trial and error is what works the best with planning post times.

Everyone has different demographic bases so you have to figure out what works best for you and your webpage.

What are some of your best tips for optimizing your social media sites?

I’m looking to begin my very own blog in the future but I’m
using a tough time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is mainly because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m trying to find something completely

give a quick shout out and tell you I truly enjoy reading your

same topics? Thank you so much!

    1. Thanks for connecting and following along! Honestly there’s so many bloggers out there that we follow, the best thing to do is search a subject that you’re interested in reading about and you’ll find a blogger who writes about it haha. I know thats a very broad answer but Megan and I read sooooo many different blogs each day and each have our own type of writing that we enjoy reading. I will tell you that WanderingEarl actually was the very first blog I read and he truly inspired my wanderlust.
