How Travel is Good for the Soul

It seems like everywhere you turn someone is on a new adventure. That blogger you love is going everywhere you want to be, your friend from high school is in Thailand, your friend from college is finding themselves in Bali, that girl you used to work with became an expat in Australia.

What is up with everyone ditching their nice apartments and the “American dream” for #airplanelife and luxury hotels?!

Some do it because they can, some do it to live a rebellious life, but most travel the world because it is good for the soul.

How you may ask?! Here are the top five reasons travel is the best soul food:

1. Travel opens your mind

There is nothing like experiencing other cultures that will open your mind to new things. When you’re just living in your own little world it is hard to imagine how other cultures go about their day to day. It opens your mind to new ideas which floods in endless possibilities for you.

2. Travel makes you happier

Studies show that spending money on experiences bring a more lasting happiness than when you spend money on material goods. I take that as travel indeed makes you happier.

3. Forces you to spend time with yourself

Endless airplane rides and waiting times sometimes force you to be in your own head for a little bit too long.

Eventually you will start some soul searching and a little bit of finding yourself. In a new environment with a clean slate, it’s easy to be unapologetically yourself and learn to love it!

4. Try new things

It’s inevitable that at some point on your journeys, you will have to try something new, whether it be food or a new language or a new adventure.

Something is going to happen that will make you break your comfort zone. And there is nothing better for your soul than breaking those boundaries of comfort that we know and love so much!

5. Breaks Boundaries

This goes hand in hand with our friend the comfort zone, at some point in your travels you’re going to have to break some boundaries of fear.

It may be a fear of flying or a crippling fear of heights, maybe you’re afraid to try new food or have a fear of bugs. You’re going to have to face these fears during your travels and it’s either do it or go home, chances are you’re going to go for it.

Are you traveling? How has travel been good for your soul?

  1. I totally agree! We just got back from a year of non-stop traveling about 6 months ago. Still, it seems like a lifetime away. You live way more relaxed, taking every day as it comes, saying yes to (nearly) every opportunity crossing your path. You don’t desperately need your computer/phone within reach, but instead enjoy the moment as it is, whether your watching the sunset, laying on the beach, or hiking in the woods.
On the other hand you learn that the things you take for granted back home, aren’t daily life for everyone. You learn to be satisfied with the life and luxury you have.

  2. This is so true! I would much rather travel the world than have a nice apartment, and I hadn’t thought about traveling as a way to spend time with yourself, but that makes a lot of sense!

  3. You know, I keep telling people this. I just don’t understand how people don’t put traveling as a top priority, Why wouldn’t you want to see the world and everything it has to offer? Traveling builds not only character but confidence, especially solo travel. I think too many people are getting scared of what the media portrays and end up not experiencing it for themselves. What a shame.

  4. I also find I’m forced to be unconnected to devices since many destinations I go have no cell service. It really makes me focus on where I am and the beauty of the place!

  5. Yessss! Experiences > material things! I also love how it pushes me past my self-declared “boundaries.” I always feel like a new and better person after traveling.
