There’s Still Sand in My Ear: 5 Excuses to Not Live by the Beach

beach walk

The beach is my happy place. I could explore it for hours; days even and never get tired of it. I used to think that if I lived on the beach that I would end up hating it. What a foolish thought. Andrew turned to me the other day and said “isn’t it so cool to live somewhere, where people vacation.” I mean literally in the middle of everyone else’s utopia is home.

I hear a lot of negatives from people about the beach sometimes. It weirds me out.

Here’s my favs:

  1. It’s too hot.

No, the snow is too cold and you’re crazy. I love running out of a freezing cold building in the summer and getting into my steaming, hot car. Or feeling the chill of melting ice cream drizzle down my hand on a sunny day.

  1. There’s sand everywhere.

And I love it. I love the sand between my toes and finding sand everywhere for days after I leave. It makes me smile ear to ear because a part of my favorite spot came with me. Even if it’s stuck in my ears.

  1. Hurricanes.

Very irrational reason to not live there. There’s natural disasters everywhere. Next please.

  1. Population overload!

You say there’s too many people around, we say, always making new friends!!!! We seriously love meeting people from all over the world and hearing how they got there, because it always ends up being a spectacular story.

  1. Too Much Traffic.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned while spending my favorite days on the coast of New Smyrna, it’s patience. Traffic is no big deal when you’re in paradise.

It’s as if the ocean waves drag my worries away with them. I wouldn’t trade that life for anything. And for now, I’ll take the ice cream melting on my hands and the sand in my ear.

  1. OH, how I agree. A simple walk on the beach relaxes the soul. You can sit in the sand and look at the waves, each different, some high, some low, some full of foam while others break and roll. Life is difficult enough without being someplace that others have chosen rather than a beach where you feel is home.
